Breaking your gravity well
A firm hand shook
my shoulder, waking me from a sound sleep. I heard my mother’s voice urging me
to wake up and follow her. As she ushered me toward the living room, I could
hear the excitement in her voice and knew something special was occurring. She
planted me in front of the television set and told me something was about to
take place which had never happened before — something I could tell my
grandchildren about. The date was July 20, 1969.
On a small black-and-white screen I could see the fuzzy image of a moonscape
and an odd-looking vehicle called a lunar module. After what seemed an eternity
to a sleepy little boy, I saw a man emerge from the spaceship and descend its
ladder. As he stepped onto the moon, the man pronounced that this action was
“...one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
“Remember this,” my father said. “You’re seeing history being made.”
For years humanity has dreamed of being able to reach the stars but has
been repeatedly frustrated in the effort by a formidable opponent: gravity. It
takes a tremendous amount of power and resources to break free from the earth’s
gravity well.
Everything has its own gravity well. Your life, your psyche, your job,
your relationships, your business — they all have a force that binds you to
them. Initiating a significant life change in any of these areas requires a
level of energy and focus that few possess. Who can sustain the necessary level
of power needed to free a business from debt, career from stagnation or
relationship from disaster?
If you desire to break your gravity well, you must first identify your
objective. In order for mankind to break earth’s gravity we had to possess a
single, identifiable goal, that of orbiting the Earth or reaching the moon.
What specifically do you want to achieve? It is not enough to desire to leave.
You must also know where you want to go.
After you identify your objective, you must then identify the force that
has you bound to your undesirable situation. What thoughts or beliefs are
keeping you from soaring toward your dreams? Do you have a poor self-image? Do
you believe you can’t succeed because you have no financing? Are you beaten
before you begin because of a defeatist attitude?
Once you have identified your gravity well, how are you to defeat it? The
same way the human race broke free from Earth’s gravity — in stages. We didn’t
reach the moon overnight. We did it by breaking the task down into manageable
segments.
Even the rockets used to reach the moon were designed with this principle in
mind. It is much more difficult for a single-stage rocket to break free from
the earth’s gravity than for a multi-stage rocket.
What steps will you take to break your gravity well? ? Will you take a class, attend a seminar, read a motivational book or make a call?
Will you learn to build a
plan, ask for what you need or take necessary risks?
You were designed to soar. Begin breaking your gravity well today.
